The conference
highlighted the benefits of takaful, re-takaful, window operations, Shariah
and other operational issues. The Conference had a large gathering of
insurance professionals, Shariah expert, regulators, Islamic bankers and
takaful operators from Pakistan and overseas. A brief coverage of the
conference and all the presentations made by the speakers are available
at the SECP website under the link http://www.secp.gov.pk/Events/SECPTakafulConferenceKhi.htm CURRENT TRENDS IN LIFE INSURANCE IN PAKISTAN A day seminar on Current Trends in Life Insurance in Pakistan was held on March 3, 2007 at the EFU Life Assurance Ltd. Presentations of the seminar are available at the Resource Centre. Following is a review of the event by Riaz Amirali Rupani: The morning started with a frenzied 9 AM thrill in the car to reach the seminar on time. Once there, several presentations on wide ranging topics from number intensive “predictive modeling techniques” and “managing asset risks” to the more digestible “managing client relationship”, “solvency requirements” and “regulations”, and “Takaful accounting and regulatory issues” awaited us. The end of the fourth presentation led to lunch time which consisted of generous doses of calories from Pizza Hut and KFC, which would have kept us asleep for the next half hour. Fortunately the next speaker’s loud voice, some lighthearted fun, and of course a good presentation kept us wakeful, if slightly bewildered. A couple of tea breaks did the rest and kept the brains running (the secret to the prompt questions that kept popping intermittently). On a more serious note, I would insist such seminars do not just satisfy the “academic” professional development requirements (yes that’s what I mean, “academically professional”). I believe if they are taken seriously enough, they do add to your knowledge the latest developments in the actuarial profession, which escaped all your attempts to remain up-to-date, the major reason being that you do not get enough exposure to areas other than that in which you practice. One reason why such seminars will always remain very constructive is that no matter what the issue, you are bound to see things from others’ point of view. I can bet you just can’t surpass this phenomenon with anything else. Omer Morshed - President of PSoA The Attentive Audience ARCHIVES
